SHADE

These photographs and drawings address phenomena of shade and shadow in the biological and cultural worlds. Through them I developed the forms and ideas for an installation on a metal lath house, used for plant propagation at the University of California Botanical Garden (see HERE). The open work structure and its sheltering shade reminded me of the cradle baskets of native peoples whose cultures are very much alive in the Bay Area, I studied several remarkable examples held at the California Academy of Sciences, tried to imagine how a plant feels light, and considered what semidarkness means to knowledge, creative process and scientific research.
