Building Neighborhood, an entry monument. Laurel Park is a Richmond, CA neighborhood of single family homes built in the 1960s. Five or six different styles were built with the intention of creating a racially and economically diverse neighborhood. Now almost fifty years later, the community has lost any knowledge of its origins and was seeking a way to understand and celebrate its collective and distinct identity within contemporary Richmond. A collaboration was convened through a program at the Richmond Art Center, between myself and a committee of the neighborhood council.
The result is this sculpture proposal, which marks the main entrance of the neighborhood. The letters are modifications of the building types in the neighborhood, to be made of 1/2" steel plate painted the colors of actual Laurel Park houses. Construction documents and fabrication bidding were completed in 2009 but the project was not built.
